What types of magnetic materials are generally used in permanent magnet motors?

Permanent magnet motors utilize permanent magnets to provide excitation without the need for excitation coils and excitation currents. They are characterized by their small size, high efficiency, energy-saving and light weight.

There are several types of magnetic materials used in permanent magnet motors, including:

Neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnetic material: NdFeB is the most widely used permanent magnet material in permanent magnet motors. It has high magnetic energy product, high coercivity and is also known as a strong magnet. Motors made with NdFeB are small, light weight and high in cost-effectiveness.

Samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets: SmCo magnets have very stable magnetic properties and strong temperature resistance. They are more suitable for motor applications than NdFeB, but they are also very expensive and mainly used in hi-tech fields such as aerospace, military, etc.

Ferrite permanent magnets:  Ferrite magnets have the advantages of being difficult to oxidize, having a high Curie temperature and low cost. They are generally suitable for medium and low-end motors, but they have larger volume and lower magnetic properties compared to NdFeB and SmCo.

AlNiCo permanent magnets: AlNiCo has a high residual magnetism (up to 1.35T) and a low temperature coefficient. It is the latest developed permanent magnet material, but its coercivity is low and it has gradually been replaced by NdFeB and ferrite magnets since the 1960s.

Magnetic materials are an integral part of the magnetic circuit and the magnetic source of permanent magnet motors. Permanent magnet motors have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of permanent magnet motors include: simple structure, high reliability, high efficiency, low temperature rise, small size and light weight, high power factor, high starting torque, good power density, easy to form a new type of magnetic circuit, and strong overload resistance.

The disadvantages of permanent magnet motors include: high cost of permanent magnet materials, irreversible demagnetization under high temperature, vibration or overload current, high requirements for control systems, and inconvenient maintenance.
